A fundamental challenge facing many communities is how to support those children who are economically, educationally, or emotionally disadvantaged. We believe that at the Big Buddy Program we create an opportunity for the community as a whole to help – and help we have.
Our work is not possible without contributions from community members and corporations. We are fortunate to be a United Way Agency and have received consistent support from the Louisiana Department of Education, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, Irene W. Pennington Foundation, Huey and Angelina Wilson Foundation, and ExxonMobil.
Together we are making a difference in the lives of our children.
Our Vision
That every child has a positive role model leading him/her to make good choices resulting in a healthy rewarding life.
Our Mission
To provide access to positive role models and learning experiences to children who lack these resources.
The History of Big Buddy!
Big Buddy, a local non-profit youth organization, founded as a mentoring organization, has been serving youth in the Baton Rouge community for 27 years. What started out as a psychology class's semester project at Louisiana State University is now a fully developed local youth organization that serves over 8,000 children per year through mentoring, tutoring, after-school programming, leadership training, athletic activities, summer enrichment, weekend activities, and targeted truancy programs. Big Buddy has strong community support and a network of 700 volunteers who gave approximately 8,000 hours of service in 2006.
